A book drive promoting literacy in Palm Beach County

 

Project Dates: March 9th - April 30th

 

Spring Clean Your Bookshelves 

Starting March 9th, we will be collecting new & used books for adults and children in Palm Beach County. If you have been thinking of cleaning your house and getting rid of your old books, this is your chance.

 

Students receive 1 hour of community service hours for every 5 books donated!

Your donated books will benefit several organizations throughout Palm Beach County:

Did you know in Palm Beach County...
 

  • 1 in 7 adults in Palm Beach County lacks basic prose literacy skills (2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy)

  • 12.3 percent of the 972,851 adults age 25 and older do not have a high school diploma (US Census Bureau's 2012 American Community Survey)

  • 17 percent of the total births in Palm Beach County in 2013 were to mothers who had less than a high school diploma (Florida Department of Health)

  • 39 percent of public fourth grade students and 44 percent of public tenth grade students read below grade level (2014 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test)

  • 146 languages and dialects are spoken by students in the public school system (School District of Palm Beach County, 2014)

  • 22.4 percent of the 1.3 million residents are foreign born (US Census Bureau's 2012 American Community Survey)

  • Among people at least five years old, 30 percent speak a language other than English in the home (US Census Bureau's 2012 American Community Survey)

 

 

We want your books – we will find a home for all of your books. If you have a used book that is not fit for donation, we will recycle it for you.
